Mudmen Paintings
This series was inspired by an ancient text by Procopius, who wrote a mainstream military history and a description of the monuments which the Roman Emperor Justinian built.
However, he had to keep his most acute writing for posthumous publication. This text portrays Justinian and Theodora as corrupt, immoral, and just plain evil.
The original title of this work was Anecdota. Procopius speculates that Justinian might have been not even human, perhaps vampiric.
He quotes eyewitness accounts of Justinian shapeshifting into a ‘shapeless mass of flesh’ and latterly referred to as a Meat-Headed Monster. Any similarity to The Blockheads is purely coincidental!
