His muscular body and, effectively, a uniform, is what might be expected from a 1940s-50s comic book hero but less easily realised if the particular hero character made the jump to a film franchise. Muscular true actors might have been in short supply but several muscle men would be “discovered” as actors.
The image portrays the ideal fed into people’s imagination but although such a very tight mask would prove impractical for use in film, the public was very accommodating and happy to allow artistic licence in an age before CGI.
A fan in the 40s or 50s would have been glad to have such an image adorning their wall and now an image of such striking colours and aesthetic character can generate nostalgia for the Golden Age of Comics.
