The Female Form

Pop art paintings and prints collection, featuring the female form. Influencing references of 25,000-year-old of fertility deities to the renaissance nudes. Doug Kemp's fine art collection

Female Form, Artist Nudes – Examples From Pre History

The oldest art depicting the female form can be dated back to prehistory. The Venus of Willendorf’ (A small 11 cm high naked female figurine made out of limestone) was discovered in Austria in 1907 and is believed to have been made some 25,000 years ago, some 20,000 years older than the oldest pyramid.

Many similar female figurines have been found and are traditionally referred to by archaeologists as “Venus figurines”, this is due to the widely-held belief that depictions of nude women with exaggerated sexual features represented a Mother goddess or a representation of fertility. However, the reference to Venus is metaphorical since the figurines predate the Roman mythological figure of Venus by many thousands of years.

The nude in art has always been around, right from classical times with classical Gods and Goddesses wandering through landscapes as they drank and danced with nothing much on….Lovely!

Then came the Nordic Gods. By the fourteenth century, two separate traditions had developed, the Renaissance and the Gothic. I am definitely of the Gothic tradition.

My nudes fall into three group headings, all made for different reasons.

  1. Arcadian nudes, almost classical but the most surreal because I was married at the time.
  2. Girly magazine nudes. I became saddened because the lovely smiling Betty Page type nudes turned into pornographic sad exploited young girls and I wanted to give them some dignity back.
  3. Structured nudes. The square format is supposed to be the hardest shape to work a figure into, hence the figures became more and more structured and abstracted. Doug Kemp.

Arcadia Series Of  Fine Art Paintings

Download the hidden Arcadia paintingsArtist Vs AI page

Arcadia, although also being the name of a region in Greece, as in this series of canvas paintings it also refers to ancient Greek mythology.

Located in the Peloponnese (A geographic region in southern Greece), Arcadia was considered to be a wilderness in which the God Pan resided, along with his dryads, nymphs and other spirits (but not Ouzo at the time).

Nymphs. These are Mythological spirits of nature depicted as a beautiful nude women who inhabit rivers and forests.

Dryads. These are nymphs who inhabit trees.

The God Pan, in Greek mythology, was a deity of the wild, fertility, sexuality and rustic music and taught the shepherd Daphnis to play the Pan flute. In the Arcadia series of paintings, the point of view is that of Pan (so he is not seen). Pan’s traditional appearance in art is that of a Satyr, a more or less bestial in form, and is generally represented as a vigorous and lustful figure having horns, legs, and the ears of a goat. However, his mother still loved him.

Pan had a mighty roar and could display excessive speed without tiring, he had the ability to travel between Mount Olympus and the human realm at any time he chose.

Pan also had the ability to transform objects into something else or other forms. And is known for his varility and for possessing a great sense of humor.

Don’t Panic!  The modern word “panic” in actual fact comes from the God Pan. In mythology Pan, helped his ally in battle by letting out a mighty roar.   This cry scared the enemys which caused them to retreat in terror.  Pan’s cry during battle would later become the origin of the word panic.

Pan’s main weakness was that of lust, forever chasing after nymphs & dryads.  Because he was a satyr, (Half man, half goat) he was considered unattractive despite always being constantly sexually arowsed and virulent.  Pan was blinkered as was only able to comprehend the lighter and happier human emotions, the causality of pain and suffering were completely alien to him.

Good Old Summertime – 116 x 127 cm Acrylic pop art painting on canvas from the 2000s artist collection.

Hedonism is in the spotlight. The woman is wearing a modest one-piece swimsuit, seemingly lost in thought whilst absent-mindedly testing the water with her toes.

This character’s pose was referenced from a 1950s magazine fashion photo.

The formal summer wear for the man, a Hawaiian shirt present underneath his light-coloured blazer. A hat tip to the woman in a polite gesture of greeting. Has the Bluebird of happiness taken their hearts?

Perhaps the painting is unintentionally taking the viewer back to less complicated times when the sun always shone and joy was at the top of the agenda.
