2000 To 2019 Pop Art Paintings & Artist Prints Artist Collection

Pop Art from the 2000s. Several distinct series are readily identified from actual events, both personal and general. The subject matter within these pieces is usually clear but some are more esoteric and some research by the viewer may be required to get the “full benefit of the experience”.

Free rein to the imagination also features in some loose series’ that are not inspired by real events and appears at a time of bold expression and some experimentation. Semi realistic human form is often merged into geometric shape that challenges the view of any expected perspective. Nice colours too!

A decade of increasing street art involving political statements, including the rise of Banksyesque in the 90s. From Ancient Rome to Belfast, Graffiti becomes acceptable, even desirable, where it could not be considered vandalism.

Doug has a love of 2000 years of great World art that includes medieval wall paintings and the scale of his canvasses probably reflects this. A single piece of his work might occupy a large proportion of the wall of an average home yet it becomes more than just a “feature” and it is more portable than a mural!

The monuments art collection shows Doug’s love of Art Deco architecture. This architecture is still to be found in most cities and towns and particularly at the seaside. Not always noticed and often neglected, it was once the epitome of a brighter hope and confidence between the World wars.

Fashion (even in architecture) changed greatly post WW2, and many great examples were torn down with only a relatively recent revival and desire to preserve them. Now they are more than just monuments to times passed, and even if only the mere facade is kept and the rest has been disemboweled in modernising their utility, that remnant takes its place in the established cityscape. Some of the remaining structures formed reference to the 1950s and 1960s subculture, architecture and principles of modern-day design.

This collection also pays homage to the form of the figures and structures in the Medici Chapels in Florence, designed by Michelangelo.

Apache. Acrylic painting on canvas from the post-2000 pop art collection. The Apache is a Parisian dance formed the the early 1900s and took-off in the 20s. Inn Irene Castle’s words, this was a dance “in which the male dancer tries to demolish the female dancer, as spectacularly as possible, and usually succeeds.”

G-man is an American slang term for agents of the United States Government. It is especially used as a term for an agent of the FBI.

Gangster Tango. Part of the Soho Mini collection – Soho in the late 1950s was always like visiting a separate village within the city. Full of low-lifers and high-flyers, drunks and dreamers, sex workers and bar workers – every walk of life is represented by the nightlife and many of the nightclubs were run by the gangsters.

Depicting the death of John Dillinger. After evading police in four states for almost a year, Dillinger was wounded and went to his father’s home to mend. He returned to Chicago in July 1934 and sought refuge in a brothel owned by Ana Cumpănaș or Anna Sage, nicknamed the Woman in Red. She informed authorities of his whereabouts as a way of obtaining permanent US residence.

On July 22, 1934, local and federal law enforcement closed in on the Biograph Theatre. As BOI (Bureau of Investigation, later renamed the FBI) agents moved to arrest Dillinger as he exited the theatre, he never drew a gun but attempted to flee.

He was shot multiple times in the back and killed; this was later ruled a justifiable homicide.  John Dillinger’s famous dying words were……but only as speculation….”You got me”

There were stories of women soaking their handkerchiefs with his blood as macabre souvenirs. Ana Cumpănaș was eventually deported.

Two for one or BOGOF is ‘consumerism of the Supermarket’ at its best.  The phrase is borrowed here to describe but not to dictate to, the at least two separate subjects that have been split.

Split as if in a prism, or as a boss-eyed view through some vertical blinds or even the desperation of a poor reconstruction of the images that have accidentally been put through a shredder.

It is hoped that effect holds the viewer’s attention until they feel they have absorbed all the content and/or made a personal appointment to review and maybe review again.

The Birdman. No conscious influence by the legend of The Birdman of Alcatraz…..but… Robert Franklin Stroud, imprisoned from 1909 until his death in 1963 was a convicted murderer, prisoner and author who was an infamous criminal in the USA.

Stroud, during his time at Leavenworth Penitentiary, reared and sold birds and became a respected ornithologist, but when transferred to Alcatraz…

Angel (2010) is an acrylic pop art painting on canvas measuring 116 x 127 cm. Part of the artist’s collection from the 2000s, this work explores the concept of an angel beyond its religious connotations. The term “angel” is often used affectionately to describe someone dear, whether a partner or a child, and is associated with positive intentions.

In this painting, the angel is portrayed as a human beauty, swirling around with her full skirt and layered petticoats flaring, and does not directly reference religion. It evokes an Art Deco aesthetic together with elements reminiscent of Jukeboxes and the composition transports us to the late 1950s to 60s, a vibrant era marked by the rising popularity of coffee bars with the upcoming Baby Boom population.

One such iconic location was “The 2i’s” Coffee Bar in Soho, often frequented by Doug for its skiffle bands and basement dance floor. The large eyes should be considered a visual pun on The 2i’s alternatively, perhaps, the eyes of God if “She” is actually considered to manifest as a woman who likes to keep up appearances with makeup.

The 1920s saw the emergence of many female musicians and singers including African-American blues singer Bessie Smith who went on to inspire women singers from later eras and to this very day.

The video featured here from ‘Babylon Berlin’, a German TV series, encompases just about everything Doug loves about the late 1920s nightclub scene. The music, the vibe and the banana girls. Other fruits are also available.

Babylon Berlin is a German speaking neo-noir television series and is set in the latter years of the Weimar Republic (1929).

The story follows a police inspector on assignment to dismantle an extortion ring, and Charlotte Ritter, police clerk by day, flapper by night, who aspires to become a police inspector herself.

Little Bohemia

This painting depicts the botched raid by the FBI (then called the Division of Investigation) against the John Dillinger Gang who were staying at the Little Bohemia Lodge, a rural vacation lodge and restaurant located off US Highway 51 in Manitowish Waters, Wisconsin.

Angels 2 1933

The central subject is modelled on Johnny Depp. He starred in the 2009 ‘Public Enemies’ movie, where he played John Dillinger. Johhny Depp was convincingly cast in the movie and his physical likeness to Dillinger made it readily apparent that his image should be used in this painting, titled Angels 2. ………. and not a Dirty face between them.

In 1934, the “G-Men” at Hoover’s orders, superimposed John Dillinger’s mugshot over their standard law enforcement silhouette targets. They were still using these into the 1950s.

ASK, also known now as ASK Italian is a British restaurant chain which serves Italian cuisine.

The ASK chain of restaurants was founded by the brothers Adam and Samuel Kaye in 1993 and were also the ones to commission Doug Kemp for this series of Heroes and Villains canvas paintings for use as decoration and talking points in a couple of their flagship restaurants.

14 Minutes – Ruth Ellis

Ruth Ellis was the last woman to be hanged in England for the crime of murder.

Ruth was convicted of the murder of her lover, David Blakely, on Easter Sunday 1955. In the USA, they would likely say “He had it coming…”. She was hanged by the state executioner…
