Walk On By Avylic Painting On Canvas
A man and woman occupy the same city street, yet appear disconnected from one another. Positioned back-to-back at the centre of the composition, they move in opposite directions, neither making any attempt to engage with the other.
The woman pauses beside a shop window while the man continues forward, his attention fixed elsewhere. Their brightly patterned clothing and exaggerated forms contrast with the rigid geometry of the surrounding architecture. Rows of identical windows rise behind them, creating a sense of repetition and routine within the urban landscape.
The city itself seems indifferent to the encounter. Small figures appear in the distance beneath a sky punctuated by floating white cloud shapes, while the two central characters remain isolated despite their physical proximity.

The title, Walk On By, introduces a note of ambiguity. It may refer to a fleeting encounter in a busy street, but it could equally suggest a deliberate decision not to stop, not to speak, or perhaps not to revisit something that once mattered.
Doug often presents relationships at moments of uncertainty rather than resolution. Here, the viewer is left to wonder whether these figures have never met, have already parted, or simply reached a point where there is nothing left to say.
