Sad Song Singer belongs to the Nightclub Singer Mini-Series created by Doug Kemp. This limited edition linocut print measures 65cm x 60cm. The artwork portrays a scene set against a backdrop reminiscent of a nightclub with a performer framed by spotlight beams.
Clad in a dress embellished with reflective sequins, the singer exudes a luminous aura, catching the light and revealing hints of the surrounding scene’s colours, where as the plain colour background with the black surround represents the stage set backdrop. Her vibrant green eyes pierce through and her gesture conveys profound emotion.
Doug Kemp drew inspiration for this piece from Isabella Rossellini’s rendition of “Blue Velvet” in a nightclub scene whilst also paying homage to the influential female musicians and singers in the 1950s. Sad Song Singer invites viewers to delve into the performer’s world, evoking nostalgia and honouring the resilience of female singers throughout history.
