Doug Kemp Fine Art
Doug Kemp trained at Walthamstow College of Art and graduated from the Royal Academy of Arts in the 1960s.
He went on to hold a Fellowship at Gloucester College of Art and spent over two decades as a senior lecturer at Loughborough College of Art and Design.
His work pulls from personal experience, American culture — especially Chicago — comic books, film noir, gangster films of the 1930s and 40s, and a long thread of art history running back over 2,000 years.
Detectives v.2 presents a scene inspired by the visual language of 1940s and 1950s pulp fiction and film noir. Divided into bold narrative panels, the composition centres on a man holding a gun, framed against a stylised cityscape reminiscent of Venetian blinds. A woman in an elegant gown stands apart from the action, her role left deliberately unclear, adding tension and intrigue to the scene.
14 minutes depicts the sad tale of Ruth Ellis. She was the last woman to be hanged in England for the crime of murder. Ellis was convicted of the murder of her lover, David Blakely, on Easter Sunday 1955. She was hanged by state executioner, Albert Pierrepoint,
