Doug often tips the hat to art history but almost despairs at the no-holds-barred vulgarity of what many ”pin-up magazines” have become. Earlier glamour models, such as Betty Page, managed to maintain their dignity (and modesty), smiling for the camera, and projecting playful titillation rather than evoking a lewd response.
Lucy, lying on her towel and presented in a natural nudist state, is sunbathing whilst listening to the radio. She seems quite relaxed and unsurprised by the presence of the viewer and, if anything, she seems slightly inquisitive at their appearance.
