Doug Kemp Fine Art
Doug Kemp trained at Walthamstow College of Art and graduated from the Royal Academy of Arts in the 1960s.
He went on to hold a Fellowship at Gloucester College of Art and spent over two decades as a senior lecturer at Loughborough College of Art and Design.
His work pulls from personal experience, American culture — especially Chicago — comic books, film noir, gangster films of the 1930s and 40s, and a long thread of art history running back over 2,000 years.
Last Gangster captures the instant of a man collapsing after being shot, caught between the real world and an abstract lattice suggesting death or transformation. A second figure approaches from the shadows, hinting at the cyclical nature of violence and succession.
