Freda 62cm x 62cm Original Acrylic Painting On Paper – Signed artist original by Doug Kemp.

Freda, the woman depicted, essentially as a portrait, is based on a character from the comic strip Terry and the Pirates.  Here she is portrayed as a formidable femme fatale as she lounges on a Zebra pattern sofa, exuding an air of confidence and nonchalance.

In this work, she also appears to be holding the complex mechanical apparatus with cogs and gears, that was originally represented (in the painting) as a stylised torpedo with its internal mechanism exposed.

Perhaps it actually shows a part of her, intricately intertwined with her femininity, exposed as in a X-Ray or exploded view.

The original Freda made her first appearance in Dougs’ work on an acrylic canvas painting called Torpedo Jacks v.2.

This is the original painting that was produced in order to create a maximum of 25 limited edition Silkscreen prints of the same name, a few of which remain in the artist’s print store.

About The Artist Doug Kemp.  Doug was born in 1939 in Bath (because of wartime evacuation) but was raised in Walthamstow in the east end of London.  Doug has a modernist style of fine art which draws reference from personal experience, the USA (New York & Chicago) comic book hero art, pop art, post-industrialist (modern art),  film noir, art deco and gangster movies made in the 1930s & 1940s.

Giclee Artist Prints

Spelt correctly, Giclée is a French word for spray (little sprey!). This is a digital printing process in which a dedicated type of ink-jet printer is used with specialist inks to produce a high quality Art print. As an artist, I feel a Giclée print produces a better finish than other types of modern artist printing formats.

Linocut Artist Prints

A Linocut is a relief print that is produced like a woodcut but uses lino as the surface from which the design is carved as a template used for the printing. In making a Linocut, basically your design uses the raised (uncarved) areas for the different inks to print the same picture over and over.

Silkscreen Print Collection

Creating screen prints – The inks are forced through a mesh screen onto the printed surface. This enables certain areas of the screen template to be made impervious to the printing ink, in effect creating a stencil. The ink that is able to pass through forms the printed image.
