The composition features green and black smokey swirls and stylized folds of coloured paper or canvas to represent the stage set backdrop of a 1950s nightclub production, all evoking a sense of vibrant energy.
The figure is a nightclub singer with her black hair worn high on her her head and in a blue-black dress, perhaps velvet, giving that effect. Completing her ensemble, she wears long yellow opera gloves with blue cheetah spots, creating a striking contrast.
The scene transports us to the vibrant nightclubs of the 1950s, capturing the essence of that era’s entertainment and glamour.
About – Doug Kemp was born in 1939 in Bath because of wartime evacuation and was raised in the east end of London. Doug’s unique style of modernist art draws reference from personal experience, the USA (particularly New York & Chicago) comic book art, pop art, post-industrialist (modern art), film noir, art-deco and gangster movies made in the 1930s & 1940s.
