The Race. – Painting By Doug Kemp

This piece contains a visual game of coloured geometric shapes, a device where the changing sizes of the elements would normally be expected to be reversed and where there are also other challenges to the plane of perspective.

This painting is part of a mini-collection of four paintings – the ‘Dark’ series painting collection where the black background further projects the vivid colours.

Overlapping flat discs,

The circles appear as overlapping flat discs, and although the female character’s arm disappears into the top one, it does not reappear in or on the next disc.

In contrast to the flatness of the discs, the elements that initially appear as squares actually have an almost three-dimensional form as a series of boxes, possibly to fit inside each other as per a Russian doll or a child’s toy.

At least they’re going in the same direction, for a change…

There is also a relatively rare representation of an animal (other than birds). In this case, perhaps, the ghost of Doug’s pet dog “Charlie”.

When asked his opinion of this painting, Doug stated… “At least they’re going in the same direction, for a change…”
