Electro Swing. V2 pop art painting
Grace Annette, the Electro Swing dancer / YouTuber was used as the primary reference for this painting which is also part of a mini series with Electro Swing v.1 painting.
The painting draws on the essence of the striking moves in the video footage of the dancer, depicting a small woman simply dressed and dancing with her arms and legs going in different directions while her body is effectively remaining still.
dancing in a spotlight
Doug felt her Electro Swing dance performance was terrific and strived to represent this in a stylistic painting.
She is dancing in a spotlight, overlaid with coloured intersecting narrow bars as per Laser beams, adding to the dynamic and overlying the whole image.
This is together with the separate panels with isolated limbs depicted as if in motion, emphasising the various actions. Doug’s trade mark bright colours add to the vibrancy.
The stylised tiled floor is reminiscent of the large spaces, often in semi-industrial premises, required to allow the dancer an uninhibited range for their free expression.
