Diga Diga Doo V2. pop art painting
The painting started as only a circle resting on a platform but grew to incorporate other elements such as a golden chalice and the glass ‘cabinet of curiosities’ or ‘cabinet of wonder’, containing a jumble of different items that appear as transparent as the glass.
Some of these items are abstract shapes but an artist’s palette, fedora, a bird and a high-heeled shoe are readily discernible.
Danish-French avant-garde star Anna Karina
The female character in the painting is based on the Danish-French avant-garde film actress, director, writer, and singer Anna Karina, who is a favourite of Doug’s.
The image reflects a famous dance sequence where she used a supporting pole in the scene.

Hints of walls, as lines,
The image within the circle appears as if it was a view, through a telescope, of a street scene with a floating rhomboid element suggesting it represents part of a roof but extending outside the circle and not magnified.
However, there are only hints of walls, as faint lines, depicted as separate elements in themselves.

Doug’s paintings, in general, come from structural idea and visual ideas such as a snapshot from memory. One usually supports the other but sometimes they become equal partners.
