The Art Lovers

Some are self-portrait paintings featuring the alter ego of artist Doug Kemp together with the influences on his imagination. Physical objects, as either personal possessions past or present, or those just “met in passing”, often occupy a place in a corner of the mind that can trigger memories.

These can be either directly connected to, or unassociated with, actual events. Memories are personal and the versions of the reality of the same event from the point of view of other individuals present will not necessarily be the same.

Particular physical objects, if still in existence, maybe a constant jolt to the mind’s eye and may drive the desire to reproduce them in imagery, perhaps in the hope to exorcise their influence or just in celebration. In the end, the reality of the object may not live up to its portrayal. However, versions of some of the same objects reappear in different works.

Here Be Monsters

Here, the characters are viewing an art exhibition, actually of Doug’s previous works, with Doug represented in self portrait. He appears distracted, although not alarmed, by the flight of the bird. The female character looks over her shoulder directly at the viewer, apparently disturbed from her viewing of the artworks. They are both overlaid and intersected by bright yellow (a modern colour representing danger) abstract forms with some suggestion of teeth but, overall, apparently smothering.

The title of this piece may reflect the distaste of many artists for the amateur self appointed art critics who can loudly express their personal opinion of a piece of work, in an attempt to persuade others to its merits or perceived deficiencies. Doug maintains, as per the majority of his profession, that the effect of art should be personal, like it or hate it and be kept to themselves unless asked. On the whole, professional Art Historians tend to be more objective with no axe to grind and limited opportunity for commercial gain.

All people, generally, can be monsters

Art Lovers Mono Prints From The 1980s

A rediscovery of works, the 1960s and 70s Pop Art, that had been long in storage, and even these monoprints from the 1980s.

These works were generally found to be pleasing and often charted the development of themes, which later went on to canvas, yet as individual pieces, these have withstood the test of time and now have injected new influence, some to be reworked and reproduced.

What Are Monoprints?

Unlike most printmaking where a set of multiple images within a series can be reproduced, the monoprint is a process of creating a unique print that can be made only once. To quote the line… “There can be only one!”
