Suicide was once referred to as Self Murder, a term that, perhaps, has more of an impact than the sanitised term Suicide.
Suicide is still a crime in some parts of the World, although, after a successful attempt, the perpetrator is hardly likely to be prosecuted.
There could be, however, consequences for the treatment of the body and the dead person’s property and family. Scenes of this grisly subject are shown in this work in two separate framed panels as if viewed in mirrors.
Bright colours and patterns in the scenes and on victims’ clothing do not deny the seriousness but reflect life before death.
The state of dress of the male character might suggest that it may have been an accident during Auto Erotic Asphyxiation rather than intentional suicide – unless it was taken to its ultimate high.
The area between the panels has a series of separated and alternating parts of different images (‘two-for-one’), held within the same space, and invites the viewer to attempt to reconstruct each image within the mind’s eye.
