Doug Kemp trained at Walthamstow College of Art and graduated from the Royal Academy of Arts in the 1960s.
He went on to hold a Fellowship at Gloucester College of Art and spent over two decades as a senior lecturer at Loughborough College of Art and Design.
His work pulls from personal experience, American culture — especially Chicago — comic books, film noir, gangster films of the 1930s and 40s, and a long thread of art history running back over 2,000 years.

Detectives v.2 presents a scene inspired by the visual language of 1940s and 1950s pulp fiction and film noir. Divided into bold narrative panels, the composition centres on a man holding a gun, framed against a stylised cityscape reminiscent of Venetian blinds. A woman in an elegant gown stands apart from the action, her role left deliberately unclear, adding tension and intrigue to the scene.
