Movement In A Time Of Bubbles. Pop Art Painting

Painted during the 2021 Coronavirus pandemic and the ensuing lockdown, showcasing the interplay between several of Doug’s points of interest.

The Bubbles themselves appear to be bouncing or perhaps the images within them are being beamed or projected.

Dentations and parallel lines on the beams give some structure of direction and even movement.

Only one of the Bubbles contains a readily identifiable image from another of Doug’s works.

All of the images, however, are his loves from his memory and imagination. One, in the top right corner, represents an obliteration and perhaps censorship.

Memory, Censorship and the Fractured Lens

Two or the larger Bubbles have wide coloured borders and, again, perhaps are more like viewing through a lens, windows or on screens.

In any case, they highlight and emphasise the overall structure of the work.

As is common with Doug’s works, the two major characters are not meant to be direct representations of actual people but rather their classic poses; in this case, they appear to be David Byrne and Lauren Bacall.

Despite the limitations of the covid period, the series carries a lighter tone, balancing structure, rhythm and a subtle humour that runs throughout Doug’s work.
