Who was Marie Provost?
Marie Prevost was a Canadian-born film actress. During her 20-year career, she made 121 silent and sound films. Prevost’s career began to decline in 1926 with the introduction of the talkies into cinema. Life events fueled her depression and she began to abuse alcohol and binge eat, resulting in a weight gain that made it difficult for her to secure further acting jobs. Doggies Dinner – Marie Prevost’s career began to decline in 1926 when let go by Warner bros. She was also beset with personal problems, including the death of her mother in 1926 and the breakdown of her marriage to actor Kenneth Harlan in 1927, which further fueled her depression. As a result, she began to abuse alcohol and binge eat, resulting in a weight gain that made it even more difficult for her to secure acting jobs
On January 21, 1937, Marie Prevost died of acute alcoholism at the age of 40. Her body was not discovered until neighbours raised the alarm after complaining about her pet dachshund, Maxie incessant barking. Her half-eaten corpse was discovered in her seedy apartment. Maxie her dachshund had survived by making mincemeat of his mistress.” and is thought to be the origin of the term ‘Doggies Dinner’

For two or three weeks
The neighbours said
They never heard a squeak
For hungry eyes that could not speak
Said even little doggies have got to eat
That became the doggie’s dinner
She never meant that much to me
(But now I see) Oh poor Mary
Mysterious angel of the silent screen
And run like the wind
The nation’s young men steam
When Mary crossed the silent screen
Oh she came out west from New York
But when the talkies came
Mary just couldn’t cope
Her public said Mary take a walk
All the way back to New York
As her nights grew long
And her days grew bleak
It’s all downhill
Once you’ve passed your peak
Mary got ready for that last big sleep
The cops came in
And they looked around
Throwing up everywhere over
What they found
The handy work of Mary’s little dachshund
That hungry little dachshund
