Domestic Animals V2 - #PopArtDoug

This appears to continue the story begun in Domestic Animals v.1, showing what might be the same couple at a later date.

The man once again reads his newspaper, but now at a distance, while the woman looks on, separated both physically and, perhaps, emotionally.

However, in the parlance of the time, she appears to have “made an effort” with her carefully styled hair and formal dress, hoping for the man’s attention.

Perhaps this is a metaphor for love growing old.

Light from the window illuminates the man and falls across the floor but leaves the woman largely in shadow, catching only the top of her hair. Outside the window is daylight, bright and green, in contrast to the outer darkness of v.1. Yet here the interior remains subdued by shadow and mood.

Doug again uses a circular frame, but here it is set against a dark square background, emphasising the darker nature of the scene. The circular framing used in both pieces echoes the language of early film techniques, as if the viewer is peering through a portal into private lives, turning everyday moments into quiet drama and fuelling domestic expectations..
