Jump Jump. Acrylic Painting On Canvas
The floating dancers, caught in a synchronised, mid-hop are drawn from a sequence from the 1969 musical comedy-drama Hollywood film ‘Sweet Charity’ which featured the American actress Shirley MacLaine.
Doug thought it was great and was so impressed by the dancers’ grace and form that he felt he had to commit these poses to canvas.
Painted in around 2015, at a time when Doug was adopting the use of black and darker colours for use as backgrounds in a series of five paintings.
A representation of a physical structure,
In this particular work, there was also a divorce from the regularly used device of a circle, but it still utilises a diagonal bar for the structure of the image and hints at it being a representation of a physical structure, such as a girder, in the actual scene in which the characters are dancing.
A black background is a common device to emphasise or throw the colours of the main subject forward and is now a genre in itself for professional, amateur and electronic artists.
