The Running Woman. Painting – Talking Pop Art With Doug

The first in 10 hours of recorded interviews talking pop art and paintings with Doug. We were very much finding our footing & format with this initial release of the Running Woman acrylic painting on canvas.

Running Woman – 116 x 127 cm Acrylic pop art painting on canvas from the 2000s, ‘Dancing Times’ and ‘Divorce’ artist collection.

The circle is the primary focus of the painting, incorporating layered optical circular suspensions, which create the illusion of our heroine, traversing the rings that represent this reality and beyond.  

Luke Kemp –  Running Woman, Acrylic painting on canvas. Doug likes to do lots of running women. He also likes to have lots of dancing men in there. There is quite a lot going on in this painting.

A Big target with a woman running through it, with an ample piece of leg in there. There are some kind of abstract shapes and images on the right-hand side of the painting, And there is someone falling as well. So tell us about this painting.

Doug Kemp – Well, the kind of woman that was referenced out of a magazine. Again, I like circles. I like squares and geometry. The characters, the guys, they are out of other paintings. You see I start with an area which is her, then what you do with the other side and it sort of it evolves itself at that point.

Doug Kemp – So the bottom guy falling, this is part of another painting, but also its abstract geometric format. So you’re inventing all the time (well at least I am.) But it is primarily the circle is a target maybe she’s running through… where is she running through? there are different levels. Again these are the games that I play all the time and the viewers can play any way they want to.

Luke Kemp – Okay. So she’s running from something.

Doug Kemp – Oh, she’s just running. Yeah, it’s she might be a trainee footballer.

Luke Kemp – Could well be.. England women’s team won the other day. Yeah. Oh, he missed it completely.

Doug Kemp – Missed what?

Luke Kemp – The Women’s World Cup final.

Doug Kemp – Oh I saw the advert and all the bits and pieces. Pft – On one of those joke things that Bob* sent

Luke Kemp – Dougs brother

Doug Kemp – Is the shot from the girl who whips off her jumper and runs around with her bra on and you know… And of course what they have done.. The buggers, they have actually taken her bra off and she is running around showing her knockers.

Luke Kemp – Oh dear, this never happened

Doug Kemp – No it didn’t happen no

Luke Kemp – There is another shot of that (Meme) With Prince Andrew chasing after her as well

Doug Kemp – Ha Ha!

Luke Kemp – But he wasn’t sweating. LOL – Anyway That was the running woman!

The Running Woman. Painting From The Book Of Doug

Twinned with ‘Running Man’, ‘Running Woman’ is actually running into the frame.

Again, the circle is the primary focal device of the painting, incorporating layered rings, which create the illusion of the character traversing the different planes that represent this part of reality and beyond.

Several interpretations may be offered as to where the woman particularly belongs.

Doug states that these are the games of the device and the suggestions he likes to play and build in when creating any painting.

In his opinion, the viewer can play out the scene and add their own interpretation any way they choose…

The lower panel on the right depicts The Falling Man and is a recurring character found in Doug’s art (Mr. Icarus), but in this instance has been placed on an abstract geometric background, perhaps reminiscent of shards of broken glass from a shattered Mondrian window.

The upper right panel also depicts a recurring character, from a painting series titled “Chevy Dancing”, and is sporting a check (Zoot) suit, not quite in the one plane of perspective. However, this is tempered by the abstract background.
